I saw this movie in a movie store once and was pleased to find that I had come across another Leone.  When I looked at the back I noticed that it didn't look western at all. If anyone could give a short plot or setting that would be great.

Ever the facetious one

- OUTA is a gangster film, set in New York during the 20s, 30s and the 60s. The plot is incredibly complex and multi-layered, but essentially it revolves around a Jewish gangster's guilt over having got his closest friends killed during a bank raid.

- It is the end product of the experimentation with flashbacks that Leone was developing in his earlier films, being more or less entirely flashback or flash-forward - it is set partly during the main character's childhood, partly in his adulthood and partly in his old age.

- It is generally considered Leone's most complex, intelligent and painstakingly thought out film. It is also incredibly long - getting on for four hours. Like his earlier films it's still very watchable and well-paced though.

- It is a lot less stylised than earlier Leone films - no tense duels or snappy montages. It is also in many ways a lot more mature than his earlier films - no over-the-top heroism, and it deals very frankly and confidently with sex. As it is set in cities obviously there are none of the sweeping landscapes, although there are still some beautiful cityscape shots.

- There's still a lot in common with the Leone westerns - a kind of surrelistic dreamy atmosphere; hard-hitting violence; a slow, deliberate pace. The Leone obsessions with time and male friendships are more apparent than ever.

One thing that everything seems to find is OUTA grows on you. Most people don't like it on first viewing, but eventually love it the 4th or 5th time round. It's well worth the effort if you ask me.

It's class.

Well I wouldn't say Leone's style that he had in his westerns is completely gone. His photographer's eye is as keen as ever.

I haven't seen this yet either, but I bought it yesterday at a store that was going out of business, so I got it for a little discount. 8) I might be able to watch it pretty soon.

Enjoy it.  I definitely didn't much like it when I first saw it, maybe because it was so long, and it was late at night, and it was the first Leone movie that I saw.  It really stayed in my mind though, and I watched it many months later.  I don't know what I was thinking when I first watched it, but I think the film is absolutely brilliant.  Even though it's not as watchable of likeable as some of Leone's other films, in many ways, it's his best.

I finally watched the movie today. ::) ;D

Loved it! I felt myself getting drawn into the story early on, and was really in it until it was over. It's been a while since I've seen any gangster movies, but I'd say this ranks as being one of the best I've seen.

No, hadn't seen it prior to today. I bought it back in March. I guess it takes a while to get around to a 3 hour and 45 minute movie. :D

That's another movie I haven't seen yet. I bought it for my mom several years back on VHS. I was planning on watching it a few months back but didn't get around to it.

Not only that, the crane shot that rises to reveal the extent of the Confederate wounded will remind you of another director's work.
