When clint say's to ramon at the end "Load up and shoot" and then they battle to load there gun first, and clint puts one bullet in the chamber then spins it around fast to beat ramon and then kills him with the shot.
Now i don't know anything about guns but does clint's character know exactly how fast to spin the chamber in the gun so that bullet will be fired or does that gun always fire the bullet thats there or something, or is it luck. Because a film like the deer hunter shows that if a bullet is put into the gun then it's just luck to see if the bullet is going to be shot or whatever.
Does anyone know or is this a floor in a truly genious film?

draw your gun, if you can...

I have been shooting Colt45 for years. The way Clint spins the cylinder is just meant for the audience. In reality to go from the loading gate of the gun to the bullet to be aligned
with the barrel port you need to click the cylinder exactly four times and then cock the hammer. The gun is ready to go bang then. Spinning like in the Ramon duel would be roulette pure. ;)

Yeah, but you see he really dosen't have the time to sit there and click the cylinder 4 times and then cock it.  The spinning of the cylinder is for speed.  It just shows you what a badass Joe is as a Gunfighter.  Or as I like to call him, The Jorden of Gunfighting...  Granted it may seem a little risky but he is so good that he knows exacltly how hard to spin the cylinder for it to stop on the fifth cylinder hole with the live cartridge.  For if he were to sit there and click the damb thing four time surely Ramon would have beat him to the draw.... ;)

You are right Harmonica, but here is exaclty where the world of dreams (movies) and the world of reality ( when I shoot REAl Cowboy shooting competition) separate. In our competitions
we have to reload sometimes, but we don´t spin, as the risk of cylinder overtravel is too big. We click and always go BANG.
However, Clint in FOD, is a Greek semi-god coming from the
fogs of Olympus (the dynamite smoke) and therefore spins, and does not click, the cylinder.  ;) ;) ;) ;)

Sorry to bring an old topic back but have you noticed that TUCO also puts one bullet in and spins it in the gunshop scene in GBU. Obviously worked for Joe in FOD so why not TUCO as well.???????...Cigar J. where are you when needed

I guess I have to fill in for Mr. C. Joe esq. There is no way he can be sure unless he is a god which he may be.  however he should have said "do you feel lucky, Punk?" but anyway gun wise he cant be sure.

The difference is (if you're referring to the robbery portion of that scene), we have no way of knowing if the "spin" hit the right chamber.  The gunshop owner just saw him put a gun in, and obviously didn't want to take a chance.

I always just assumed with all of the skills the man with no name had, one of them was spinning the cylinder with great accuracy, now I don't know anything about guns either and I'm sure no one does it, but i'd guess that it is possible to spin 4 clicks or 10 or whatever to come back around without actually clicking it.

even if not, in all fairness he's fast enough to give all 6 chaimbers a go before ramon could at that point cock and shoot. as ridiculous as that might be it makes the argument about spinning irrelevant.

He only pretended to unload the gun anyway by dropping some shells he had in his belt.
 ;)
He could spin all he liked and confidently land on an unfired cartidge.

But sure, that spinning is classy. Wonder whose idea it was: I bet it was Leone.

Question solved.

IMDb post:

spinning the chamber?

by wpglory » Tue Apr 2 2013 20:08:23

I got interested in this subject many decades ago, so I loaded one round in my Colt single action, and spun the cylinder. I found it takes very little practice to get very accurate at performing that trick. Your mind records the exact time to let the cylinder spin, your hand remembers just how much force to use for consistent rotation speed, and in no time you can do it every time. The question is, why would someone practice a stunt like this?

Well its not just good enough to kill Ramon.......You have to send him to the grave proving that Joe was better with his pistol then Ramon was with his rifle..............When a man with a 45 comes up a man with a rifle.....the man with with a pistol is a dead man......Or something like that.....please dont correct me with exact dialog.

I'm suddenly getting a terrible urge to watch FOD again (even though, living in liberal-dominated NYC, I've never touched a gun in my life...) I think I am gonna give my Ripley's BRD a spin  :)
