I'm convinced that GBU might honestly be the best example EVER of using music in a film.  Does anyone think it would've had any chance at Academy Award for Best Score if it hadn't been Spaghetti?  How great to compose original song for the prison camp POWs instead of using a "real" song (written of course as last song by Tommie Conner, known for "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus").  How about similar for Eli Wallach performance?  Also, didn't realize it the first 10 times I saw it, but GBU is probably the most anti-war film ever, if looked upon from that aspect: all the young soldiers without body parts, half-soldier, one-eyed Jackson/Carson, battles for the bridge, plus especially scenes after the mission in "14 extra minutes" showing the road littered with dead soldiers and Angel Eyes in the Confederate camp.

Very seldom does a film composer get the opportunity to work with a director who understands the value of the score to the overall work.  Hitchcock/Herrmann, Fellini/Rota, Leone/Morricone are three of the best examples. And in each case, these were outstanding composers who added to the works of great directors. Herrmann and Morricone elevated other films, but their music was not as integrated as it was in the symbiotic films they did with the aforementioned directors.
All that being said, I think the Leone/Morricone collaboration on OUATITWEST is even better that GBU. Frank's first appearance was at the Mc Bain ranch and Jill's ride to the ranch are two of the best musical interludes I've ever seen.

I would have to say, there has never been a better score than GBU. I love the score in OUATITW but it doesn't have the complete command of theme as does the score in the GBU.

I will say, it seems funny to me that the film does have several anti war ideas yet the personal bloodbath that takes place around and because of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly all for their person greed seems ironic...

Crude scenes of soldiers without body parts aren' new in the cinema.

What is really surprising about the "anti war" message of the film is that those kind of images where showed in the middle 1960'. The public wasn't prepared for this kind of scenes.

Did you know also that american public was shocked by the OUTW scene in wich Henri Fonda kills Timmy?

I also heard that some people tried to make a boicot of this movie because they didn't want to see Henri Fonda (Us "good" boy), in this kind of role.

I have to agree with you.  GBU contains some very cool music, but technically spoken the music in OUTIW is a better symbiosis with the image and digs deeper in the human emotional recognization in an unclassic way.

Its very hard to say if GBU score is better than OUTW's one. Very very hard.

I think the difference between those 2 score is that OUTW is a more "epic" one, a more grandiose one.

But there are some titles in the GBU score, like the "story of a soldier" who are really great.
