Been watchin this movie since 69.  Never thought of Cheyenne as being Mexican.  Where does this come from?.  I sure didn't get it from the movie and I certainly didn't know he was supposed to be Mexican.

He is supposed to be Mexican. However Robards doesnt play him in the stereotypical loud and obnoxious fashion that befalls upon all mexican characters in westerns.

His full name in the original script was Manuel " Cheyenne " Gutierrez.

Who are you?

The character Manuel 'Cheyenne' Gutierrez was clearly intemded to be Mexican, i would argue when Robards played him that idea was shelved pretty swiftly as he is clearly not mexican. the only allusion i can think of is the references to Catholicism but that could mean anything.

For some reason, the first time I saw this movie I knew Cheyenne was Mexican. Not by his accent ( which is clearly not Mexican ) but by the way he looks.

So the only way we are supposed to know he is Mexican is from some script?
From his line in the movie, he is portrayed as being
anti-Catholic also.
"Felt like shootin a priest once.....Catholic priest that is."
Nope, I don't see a Mexican connection at all.
If I've learned anything from reading about Leone,  or info about any of his westerns, its that scripts, dialog, and direction can be altered, dropped, or changed on a whim.  Leone's whims worked I might add.
I would also say that to discredit Robards for his acting, either as a supposed Mexican or not, is poor judgement.

Cheyenne isn't anti-Catholic. He says " I'd kill anything, but never a kid. It'd be like killing a priest...Catholic priest that is. "

Were it not for Frayling I would've assumed he was a half-breed: half-Irish, half-Indian.  Dunno why he would need to be Mexican.  ::)

I know his name should be a giveaway but it hadn't occured to me before that Cheyennes half-anything?
But like Milian in Face To Face  and LVC in Capt Apache(snigger ;D) the performance is so memorable that it doesn't really matter!
I only found out relatively recently that Woody Strode is actually a Native American rather than Negro but he's convincing in everything i've seen him in.

Cheyenne is, technically, Mexican. Robards doesn't play him as a stock film Mexican (he plays him as "Robards", his usual screen persona). Robards performance is all that one could wish. Whether you consider Cheyenne Mexican or not does nothing to alter your appreciation of his character or the film.

You know his wife is the indian woman at the train station at the beginning of "West" right?

She's a princess too. It's kinda' odd, a hawaiian princess, with a black/native american husband, filming a western made by Italians, in the middle of Spain. Sounds like a sitcom!
