In the pre-titles sequence they took care of creating a kinda visual effect to simulate it when the hidden killer shoots. Hadn't noticed it in the previous 30 and odds times I saw it.

When the shot is heard in the pre-title sequence there's a visual effect lasting 2-3 fotograms, of simulated smoke entering the screen from the right.
