given some of his works in spags. has deceptivly simple chords all in D min how hard would it be to come up w/ a new angle ?  sometime when your fooling around on the les paul see if you can come up w/ a new varition to the theme.

I can assure you that whenever I play my guitar its always a new variation on the original.

Unfortunately this isn't down to any musical lateral thinking on my part, it due to the fact I can't play very well.

Having said that the chords are pretty straight forward, which make playing along good fun!

I'm now trying to work out the little riff on the guitar on the FOD main theme.

Wow! Thanks guys for your quick answers - I hadn't counted on that on a board with relatively low traffic :O Otherwise I'd have checked sooner. Great info, I suppose, even if I'm unsure on how to use it. 'Chords' dimly reminds me of guitars, somehow, but not being a musician of any kind, I'm not sure on how this might be applied to a carillon.
I already have several Morricone albums including several versions of the pocket watch. I can hum the melody in my sleep. Still, finding a watch like that would be perfect - there are some manufacturers who offer to do custom-made pocket watches w/ carillons, but they charge what I might pay for a middle-class car...
I've already considered tinkering with a cheap quartz pocket watch and a programmable music chip, but I fear this might be more complicated that I think. Ah, well, waiting and hoping for better times - hmmm... I might try to get the melody as a ring tone for my mobile, though...

 most cell phones provide  a setting you can write your own melody to.  MPW isn't that that to play being that it's in D min and olny has one flat to deal with.

The NAME of the melody which the watch plays is "Sixty Seconds to What?"

Years ago, when I was showing FDM at a repertory cinema where I worked, some lady came up and said she =had= to have a copy of the tune, because she was gonna get it put on a music box as a Christmas present for her boyfriend. I naturally warmed up to this idea myself, so I not only dashed straight home (I lived nearby) and taped the tune for her from an Italian pressing of the soundtrack LP, but I also took a tape recorder into the theater and recorded it as it played during the scene. (This was in the 1970s, before we had VCRs at home.)

Anyway, I presented her with the cassette and told her I'd sure like to order one of those music boxes myself. She promised to get back to me "if it's cheaper to order two." Alas, she never did. But apparently the music box DID get made. About three months later, I saw the same lady walking out of a crowded screening late at night, arm in arm with the lucky guy for whom (I assume) the box was made.

"Did you get the special project completed?" I shouted to her over the crowd. She gave me a smile, a big thumbs-up, and pointed at her date. "He LOVED it!" she said, and promptly vanished. I never saw her again.

To this day, I still get sore thinking about that. I sure wish they'd at least brought the music box by the theater one night and let me hear it play "Sixty Seconds to What?" -- especially after all the hustle I put into making it possible.

Ive got a MiniDisc somewhere with a 60 second filler at the end with the pocket watch tune on it. Its great as it slows to a stop.

Check out www.xingtones.com, their software is free until Jan.1   Also do a google seach for "musical pocket watch" ringtones (all four words with quotes) because this does exist for certain phones and certain providers.  Kermit - one even lists keypunch numbers for phones that allow for custom ringtones.
