Questions that scream out for an answer

Some things that need answering...
Ok.. the scene with the bank. You had the bad guys and the good guys counting along before the big boom. Just wondering a couple things.
a) how did everyone know when to start counting?
b) how did thye know to even count in the first place?
Also, about the so-called partnership between Clint and Van Cleef. How did Van Cleef know to go the oposite direction that he told Clint to take Indio? Lucky guess if you aske me. And since he was double crossed, why not get even with him, hmm?
Yes these are indeed questions that scream out for an answer.

a) They begin to count when the guards start to walk.
b) They count how long it takes for the guards to walk around the bank.
Mortimer explanes to Monco how he reasoned it out where to go, in the tavern. Morimer says to go north, Monco wants to go south, far away from Mortimer. Indio gets suspisious and heads east. El Paso is west.

Also, when Mortimer and Monco are drinking together after the hat shooting scene in El Paso, Mortimer said that he could think of three reasons why they should team up.
1/ The size of Indio's gang.
2/ So they didn't end up shooting each other.
3/ ? I don't recall him mentioning the third reason.
in these parts a man's life can depend on a mere scrap of information.

I have to agree with SHOBARY regarding Mortimer logic in where they would be. He understands his less experienced friend very well (he even said he was exactly like him at that age). Even more important, he understands Indio, who doesn't trust anyone. Indio even states to his Fat Buddy, " I knew he was a bounty killer (I think that's right) from the beginning." Seems to me, if I were Indio, I wouldn't do anything Monco suggested. Lastly, Mortimer knew as he stated, El Paso was West and the only logical dirrection to go would be East.
All those facts combined, Mortimer could easily anticipate were they would go. He probably knew were Indio's allies resided and let's be honest, there weren't too many towns to hide at this time.

the whole matter of how the conel knew which way to go seems pretty obvious, he knew that manco would go the opposite of the agreed direction, the direction being north. Well the opposite of north is south, so he could count out north and south as indio would never trust manco's advice. so he is left with either west of east, they can't go west because that leads to el paso so they had to go east. Pretty simple really, especially if you are the genious that is douglas mortimer

Did Manco really double cross Mortimer? Or was he trying to gain Indio's trust by suggesting the opposite route, in an attempt to encourage him to take the agreed route north? When I first watched it I didn't interpret Manco as having intentionally deceived Mortimer.

yeah when i first saw it, i too thought that there was no malice involved, but in the following scenes it makes it pretty obvious that he meant to decieve the conel.

yeah caius,
that´s why they are called "anti-hero",
can you imagine John Wayne as the Colonel and
Jimmy Stewart as the Monco? NO WAY that Stewart could
doublecross Wayne in an american classical western!

double crosses??? In American westerns??? Off the top of my head.
see VERA CRUZ(Lancaster/ Cooper double cross each other)
see RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY(Joel McRea and Randolph Scott-doesn't get anymore classic than that)
see THE PROFESSIONALS(Marvin/ Lancaster double cross their employer)
see THE SEARCHERS(Wayne sets up Jeff Hunter as a sitting duck)
see MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE(Wayne and Stewart...who fired the shot? who's values were corrupted?)

thanks visitor
probably my remark was too succint and was misunderstood,
of course there are double crossing plots in am. westerns,
what I was trying to say is that over the decades of classical am. western people got accustomed to link some faces (like Stewart and Wayne) mostly (in AVERAGE) to a specific moral role: for example, in AVERAGE, Wayne or Cooper and Stewart are connected to the just person, the good guy .. so, one´s mind is not readily prepared to imagine a story where two icons of "good guys" suddenly play roles where they treacherously double cross each other. We learn in FAFDM that van Cleef has a golden heart when he lets Monco have all the money, and then he plays the mercyless torturer in GBU, same with Fonda
in OUTW. Leone just makes the familiar heroes become antiheroes.

okay at the beginning the ticket seller[robert camardiel] tells mortimer that calloway was worth 1 thousand but 2 zeros were added making 100 thousand. After killing calloway the sherrif of tucumcari only gives mortimer 1 thousand.

The two zeroes were added by the wanted man himself and were thus not legally binding.
