The Good, The Bad & The Ugly novel

   Do any of you have the  Good, The Bad & The Ugly novel and if so how is it? I heard about it on a thread here and am planning to buy one on Ebay very soon. I'd be interested to hear how the final duel was described in the novel; whether it has that same tension and suspense. For those of you that don't have it or didn't know about it, There is a novel and you can possibly find some on Ebay. Also, there's going to be a Man with No Name comic series coming out toward the end of the year, and the first storyarc takes place right after The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

The novelization was written after the film, but I remember it annoyingly calls Blondie "Whitey".

Wasn't immpressed enough to remember about the shootout, words ain't going to be able to describe the same way the tention built up in the film.

There is a thread on here somewhere recently listing them I think there were 5-6 at least NWNN novels beyond the three films.

The only other one I read other than GBU was called "Blood for a Dirty Dollar" it had "Whitey" & Tuco in it, it was ok.

Whitey? Was it written by the same guy who did the novelization?

Yea I think it was Joe Millard or something like that, do a search there is a thread here on the board on it.

I have a copy of the novel.  It does manage to fill in a number of plot holes:  how the gold came to be buried in sad hill cemetary in the first place, how Angel Eyes infiltrated the Union camp, etc.  Tuco has some additional lines, all of which are just as funny as his lines in the film.   

Unfortunately I did find the use of the nickname "Whitey" instead of Blondie very distracting.  And as for the ending duel, Tuco doesn't take part!  He sits it out!  Can you believe it?  Perhaps Millard was working from an earlier version of the script, as there are a few more little changes from the film.

The novelization is no doubt interesting, but let me caution, whatever it adds to the story must be considered apocryphal. It had neither the blessing of Vincenzoni nor SL. Nonetheless, I would like to hear how Joe Millard fills some of those gaps in the movie (his theories are as good as anyone's). What does he say about how AE infiltrated Betterville? And what are some of those additional lines you like so much? Please share!

Angel Eyes finds a recently deceased Union Officer (who, luckily, is just about his size) and steals his uniform, papers and identity.  That's how he gets into Betterville.

Some favourite new lines of Tuco's:

To Blondie in the monastery, imploring him to reveal the name on the grave:
"I will have a mass said for you every day.  Better yet - I will have a mass sung for you, even if it costs a little more."

To Blondie, just after learning that Blondie has accompanied Angel Eyes to the bombed-out town (when Tuco has just emerged from the bubble-filled bathtub):
"You talked!  You told him the name.  You betrayed your own partner, who loved you like a brother.  Who saved you from that awful desert, eh? Who shared his water with you?  Who carried you to the mission and stayed by your side night and day to nurse you back to health?"

To Blondie at the bridge as they place the dynamite:
"Tell me the name on the grave.  Then if you should be killed, I would use your share of the two hundred thousand dollars to honour your memory."

Blondie's reply:  "Let's not start that whole mass-and-candles business again!"

I don't find the idea of AE just conveniently finding a dead body with the right documents, though. Better that he kills a guy (after literally sizing him up) and steals his identity.

I think I have all of the Joe Millard books. I remember that they used to be available from W H Smith here in the UK in the late 80's but I got most of mine from a second hand UK book shop in Alberfera when I was holiday there when I was 11 (with my parents!). Off the top of my head I think these are all of them:

A Dollar to Die for
Blood for a Dirty Dollar
A Coffin full of Dollars
The Million Dollar Blood hunt
The Devil's Dollar sign
The Good The Bad & The Ugly
For a Few Dollars More
A Fistful of Dollars

I remember being disappointed with the 3 novelisations of the films but did quite enjoy the rest. I think that they were good adventure stories for the age that I was at. But yeah, I agree with other people here that for GBU it padded out a few areas that were not in the film albeit that they were created for the novel.

I wonder how many books we could write to add to the collection with the word 'Dollar' in the title............
