Both composers are very good at incorerating different styles of music into their soundtracks. Both give me the same level of emotion. I was first introduced to Morricone when I saw Itzhak Perlman demostrate an sample from the Malena Soundtrack during the Academy Awards. I was suprised Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won that oscar...Malena to me was the real winner.

these two fine composers really cannot be compared fairly.
ennio lives in europe and lives that lifestyle, was trained properly in composition, and played the trumpet.
john lives in USA and works on hollywood films for a living - a good one.
he is the product of a huge machine.
he started as a pianist, playing on sessions like the Mag 7 soundtrack.
both produce high qual results.
ennio's style is more distinctive, which can be a disadvantage in scoring for film.
williams is more technical than ennio - more orchestral pyrotechnics - flashier - more "hollywood".
schindler's list is williams at the top of his game.
the mission is ennio's.

In my symponic band class we did a John Williams suite including the theme from superman, empire of the sun, and star wars. We also performed the theme from Schindler's list. As soon as I get a Cd of the performance ill try to post it here

I was listening to some soundtrack by neither of them, and father expressed his opinion that it's "nothing like Morricone or Pan Tadeusz". I told him those two were a separate class of soundtracks... I'm not sure he got it, but it brought me to the point of realising that Morricone's soundtracks and Wojciech Kilar's soundtrack for Pan Tadeusz (I'm not familiar with his other work) can stand on their own; not so many others can so well.
Maybe it's really a European & classical thing.

There are two kinds of films in this world:those which stay,even when their genre is forgotten,and those which don't.

It's not like Williams isn't a good composer, but comparing him to the maestro is like comparing a Johann Strauss to a Mozart. Just not the same level.

My top 3 for film/tv music is Ennio, Nino Rota and Murray Gold.
