Only film on the war I can think of is Forrest Gump. I'm not even sure I'd fully consider it a war film, but it's got 'Nam in it none the less.

It's not a war film but it has Vietnam elements to the story so I included it. Those Vietnam scenes were powerful. I had no choice but to add it to my list.

I haven't seen The Deer Hunter or Casualties of War yet. If I'm thinking about the right movie, I could watch We Were Soldiers. It's just too... sorry, but I can't come up any better word than...American . All the great war movies are in fact anti-war films.

Watch The Deer Hunter and Casualties of War when you get a chance. Casualities of War is one of the most underrated films of all time in my opinion. Just a heart breaking look into the Vietnam war.

I find that most people who lived through the war like Apocalypse Now the best, including my dad.

That's funny. I've talked to many Vietnam Vets, and people who lived in that era, and they prefer Platoon overall. I dunno, I've always thought Platoon was the definitive Vietnam Film. Also, Casualties of War gives us a glimpse into the hell of that war as well. Very underrated.

Great picks TB, but I have to part ways when it comes to "We Were Soldiers".
I'm typically not a harsh critic when it comes to films in general. I can
accept them for what they are, good or bad. But when I watched this film
I felt myself cringing every time I heard the cliche' dialogue and watched the sub-par
acting of Mel Gibson et al.       2/10

We Were Soldiers was a great film because it told the perspectives of what happened during this part of the war from many perspectives. From the soldiers fighting on both sides, to the loved ones at home, it may glorified the war to some extent, but overall it shows that war is ugly and brutal, but no matter how stupid it was, it is an extradorary story on how less than 400 men, manage to fight their way through 4000 men, under great leadership, and the help of air support.

There was this one scene where this gun-ho Lieutenant who Sam Elliot's character said "He wants to win medals" gets mortally wounded, and his last words were "I'm glad I can die for my country" but he showed no emotion to it. If anything, these men fought, and many died not for their country but for each other. From the broader point of view the war seemed pointless, but for these men surrounded by thousands of NVA, they didn't think about how stupid the war was, they thought about keeping each other alive.

Oh, anyone seen Indochine? It was more about French involvement in the first Vietnam War. It's pretty good.
