It's too bad the closest we get to asian horror here in the U.S. is American remakes (most of them crappy) of these movies.  And seldom do we get the chance to have them on sale for $30.00 or more, like the Takashi Mike ones that are available, such as Audition.

This is just an ode to Asian Horror. Movies I'd like to see, others I'd prefer to stay away from, etc.

Feel free to post trailers.

I'll start with "Gozu", i never understood what it's about (from trailers and such), but then of course it is Takashi Miike...

This one's a complete spoiler of the original...

I saw the remake and it's hardly any different from the original (surprisingly). It looks like a shot for shot remake.

"Imprint" - Takashi Miike. Looks very interesting and very scary. I believe this is one of the few that's available in the U.S.

IMPRINT was the only one of those MASTERS OF HORROR that was banned from cable. I liked it quite a bit and thought it pushed the envelope a bit more than his seriously twisted and barbaric ICHI THE KILLER. He has a fascination with man rape in a lot of his movies. Not sure why. He directed one or more episodes of ULTRAMAN MAXX back in 2006.

Actually, I prefer the old school Asian horror like BLACK MAGIC (1975), BEWITCHED (1981), HEX (1980), BOXERS OMEN (1983), HELL HAS NO BOUNDARY (1982) and the cult classic SEEDING OF A GHOST (1984) to name a few.

:) I was hoping you'd pitch in on this thread AC.  I don't know much about the older classics, i'm sure they're all worth watching. Do you own any of the titles you mentioned? maybe i can borrow a few, if you're all right with that.

Also, IMPRINT has been on my "wanna watch" list for a while (actually, only about three months) but i don't think it's available in blockbuster.  I know there's the "Three Extremes" set but i've never seen it, and online the prices range from about 25 to 35 bucks. Do you own that one too?

I've got the first THREE EXTREMES movie but haven't watched it yet. The first movie is supposed to actually be the second film and vice versa. Yes, I have those older films.

BLACK MAGIC (1975) deals with Singapore and Malay superstition involving an evil wizard who can grant wishes that come true. Both good and bad. However, for those who do not pay for his expensive services ultimately come to a bad end. The more popular sequel from the following year will be released by Media Blasters this October. It's more or less a remake but the exploitation elements are doubled. Honestly, I kind of prefer the original. Highlights from both include the wizard drinking human breast milk laced with women's pubic hair to remain young, hundred year old zombie love slaves kept beautiful and subservient by having 10 inch metal spikes driven into their skulls and spells that cause people to give birth to monsters and nasty worms being regurgitated or living just under the skin of the victims.

I'll post more in a bit.

All of these are subbed. Image released BLACK MAGIC here in English but they did a shitty job converting the original PAL to NTSC. The HK disc is superior in this aspect. Image also recently released the very nasty KILLER SNAKES (1974) which is shot in a very similar style to the original TCM. This one also has the English dub. I have the HK disc but haven't picked this one up yet. I did see it in Best Buy recently.

HEX (1980) is one of Kuei Chi Hung's masterpieces of HK horror. Some scenes have an almost Kubrickian flair about them and others are quite frenetic. It's a Chinese version of DIABOLIQUE with some added exploitation value and the finale is very reminiscent of the "Hoichi the Earless' segment in KWAIDAN (1965) one of the spookiest and classiest of Asian horror from Japan.

:o GASP! How have you not seen THREE EXTREMES yet?!?! Imprint looks so kickass! I saw the trailer of Dumplings but it didn't look as good as Imprint, and i forgot the title of the other film, i think it's the Chinese one?

Sounds great. (disturbing... but great) overall rating of it?

The disc I have for THREE EXTREMES also has a second disc with the feature length version of DUMPLINGS on it. The stories are--

DUMPLINGS
CUT
BOX

BLACK MAGIC was the first to kick off the evil wizard/death spell genre and I rate it 3 1/2 out of 5 and taking into consideration when it was made, it's quite ambitious for the time and was a sizable hit for the Shaw Brothers.

BEWITCHED (1981) is an interesting film and features a supposed real life wizard. It's about a tourist who journey's to Thailand and meets a girl. He professes his love for her although he only wants to deflower the poor girl. She makes him promise that he will return within a years time. He swears to it but has no intention of doing so. After the year is up, the girl goes to a wizard and has a death spell put on him and everyone connected with him. The film is mostly told in flashback and child killing is not taboo here. One wild sequence is the duel of magic scene where the evil magician drinks from a huge jar filled with fetus's and viscera to combat the white magic. A very spooky movie with some subtly OTT elements which would dominate the sequel, THE BOXER'S OMEN (1983) a movie that almost defies description but it's definitely not something you would wanna watch while inebriated. Two friends who saw it said it was one of the most unique movie experiences they'd ever seen.

I didn't even know the Shaw Brothers had made horror movies.

They did everything-- Operas, Musicals, Dramas, Adventures, Kung Fu, Horror, porn, co-productions with Italy, Germany and USA and they had a good financial investment in movies such as METEOR (1979), THE DUELISTS (1977) and BLADE RUNNER (1982). Some of their US and British financed exploitation movies are INSEMINOID (aka HORROR PLANET 1980), BLOOD BEACH (1980) and CANNONBALL (1976).

SEEDING OF A GHOST (1984) is a heavy cult classic among fans although I thought it was a bit OVERrated. I liked it, but it wasn't the gory delight people made it out to be. It is gory as all hell during the final 5 to 10 minutes, though when the woman gives birth to the Plazawa. It explodes from her stomach and goes about dismembering and mutilating a group of people at a party. There's lots of sleazy elements and tons of sex and nudity but I thought BEWITCHED was far better. Maybe since the hype has died down, I'll enjoy SEEDING better. I checked IMDB and people were fawning it there too. BEWITCHED was a surprise considering it had not been seen since its original release.

Some others I have are HAUNTED TALES (1980), CORPSE MANIA (1981) and LOST SOULS (1980), the Chinese SALO. Sadly, these three are VCD only. One to stay away from is SEX BEYOND THE GRAVE (1984). The movie starts off like gangbusters but after the first 15 minutes, it turns into a great mess of an amalgamation of AMITYVILLE HORROR and POLTERGEIST.

Nice review.

This one's more extended, but it might have spoilers, so i prefer not to read it.
