Brian Garfield on GBU's score.

I have appreciated some G.'s novels and films based on them. He's surely not a elitist.  And I may also respect and understand, though i of course do not share it, his not appreciation of SW. But here he exceeds whatever he may have to say and lose all credibility. I'll search into his book to see what lifefull score he has to praise: I'm curious.

Another pearl from G.'s book: "Ennio Morricone's jangling but saccharine and falsely romantic music scores".

Assuming this is true, so what the hollywood scores were?

I always found him to be one.

His having written thrillers and books on western belie your assumption. But probably we have two different conceptions of what cultural elitism is.

The Hollywood scores are only phony to us laymens. The genius who brought the world Death Wish, a vibrant literary work (tried to read it, it's beyond my comprehension), which morphed into the metaphysical cinematic masterpiece, operates on an undefinable emotional level. Garfield must have been the basis for the star child in 2001, as he is a universe of his own.

Death Wish (the movie) "metaphysical"? To me it always looked quite "physical".

But the talk was about his supposed elitism.

My entire post was a joke. I was taking a shot at Garfield.

hi,
whatever morricone's scores are, they are not lifeless.
at his peak....full of passion.
but........ as time has passed ,his live concert videos i've seen have been lackluster.
he's basically too old to be doing this well.
he must need the money real bad.

I don't think so. he doesn't need the money.  I'm afraid the motivation is he thinks that his music needs the respectability of concert halls. After having spent years doing concerts of his serious stuff with no critical and, obviously, popular acclaim whatever, he changed his approach and decided to give a veneer of respectability to his real, but popular, masterpieces. Not realizing that those tunes are inestricably tied to the movies and the arrangements he devised for them at the time.

titoli, hi,
there are very few greats, and EM is certainly one of them.
because of my occupation,  i have a fairly wide musical understanding re: scoring, and i would say that i cannot think of any other composer who could have done SL's work any more justice.
when i think of SL's work, EM is always there.
unique.
and lasting.
