"One banana, two banana, three banana, four...."

« #14415 : December 10, 2014, 06:05:39 AM »

funny that you mention this: I was just looking at TCM's upcoming schedule, to set my DVR for the week, and I see that this movie will be playing on Monday at 8 PM http://www.tcm.com/schedule/index.html?tz=est&sdate=2014-12-08
I was debating if I should see it or not; Cary Grant is the one actor I can't stand probably literally more than any other. Every time he speaks he makes my skin crawl, I just can't stand the sound of his voice. I've forced myself to watch a few of his famous movies (Notorious, North by Northwest), not sure if I'll end up watching this one.
I have a friend who has the same reaction to Grant. I guess if you can't stand the guy you can't stand the guy and it's pointless to pretend that you're being entertained by him.

An Affair to Remember, anyway, is a remake of Love Affair(1939). If you watch the earlier film you can skip Grant's performance (and also the singing children IIRR).

Not as a Stranger (1955) 7/10

Olivia de Havilland does a really good Swedish accent here. (Well a well-known actor does an accent, they better get it right. Having recently seen Robert De Niro fail miserably in attempting a Southern accent in Cape Fear, there is nothing worse than a well-known actor doing an accent badly. If we know what you normally sound like and now you are doing a different accent, you damn straight better get it right or don't even try. And de Havilland indeed does a convincing accent.)
Sorry, DJ, I still like watching Joan Fontaine more than de Havilland. Maybe cuz Fontaine is better-looking. But no doubt both are great actresses.   ;)
Could Fontaine muster a credible Swedish accent? By your own account you've proven her sister's the better actress.

The first time I saw this picture (on TV, having missed the credits) I could not place the actress, her performance was that good. She completely lost herself in her role. Only later when I saw the final titles did I realize just how good Ms. de Havilland had been.

The Long Goodbye (1973) - 9/10
New Blu-ray release. Absolutely excellent, as always. One of the greatest noir ever made, and Altman more or less at the top of his game. Nothing but praise. Makes me wish Inherent Vice was this good - there are plenty of comparisons.

We are in agreement yet again.

Ok, I'm back home. I'd like to stay more in the US but I sometimes need coffee or something called "bread" so I had to leave. In the plane:

Guardians of the Galaxy - 4/10
It was really bad. It's the kind of plot that is to script what cheddar is to cheese: it doesn't even try. Still, I smiled a couple times and I appreciate the effort: a mainstream comic book adaptation that tries to be fun to watch. I hadn't seen this since the very first Spiderman.

Macbeth - 8/10 - Roman Polanski works out his post-Charles Manson demons through Shakespeare. The style is both absorbing and unsettling. Not entirely sold on the acting; Jon Finch is great, everyone else workmanlike.

Winter's Bone (2010) 8.5/10

This is a really good movie, and an incredible performance by Jennifer Lawrence.
This movie is REALLY bleak, depicting a shitty rural town in Ozarks where there doesn't seem to be any hope for anything. I mean, this shit is BLEAK.

I've only seen Lawrence in one other movie: American Hustle, and I did not like her there. But she is amazing here.

I did a little search here, nobody has ever posted about this movie on these boards. Has nobody seen it? This is definitely a movie for y'all to put in your queue.

And btw, if anyone can recommend any good dramas that Lawrence is in, I'd put 'em in my queue. I'm not interested in Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies, so I'm not watching The Hunger Games or X-Men movies, but are any of her dramas good?

Winter's Bone (2010) - 7.5/10
The SLWB search engine sucks. I'd be surprised if nobody else saw this film. I remembered giving it an 8/10.

Nightcrawler 7/10

Nicely (inspired by but far from the Mann/Drive league) shot, very good performance by Jake G (not the incredible one you ear here and there but largely enough to make me want to see his next movies just because he's in it), simple and efficient plot transcended by a great character and great dialogues and TERRIBLE 90's music that make you wait the whole film for a Michael Douglas cameo (how could Mr DJ give 10 to a movie featuring an Oblivion-like OST?). That could have been a 8 or a 8.5 but the thing that really bothers me is the predictable ending, that I'll discuss in the movie's thread.
Still enjoyed it a lot and you should all see it, most people on this board will like it.

Yes, the search engine does suck. Type "Winter's Bone" – with or without quotes – into the search box, and you still get exactly zero results.

Eternal Sunshine - 9
American History X - 9

Under the Skin (2013) - 5/10
Praised by some critics as the best film of the year (both 2013 and 2014 depending when you consider it was released), mauled by Amazon/Netflix reviewers as the worst movie they've ever seen. For me, it's not much more than an excellent experiment in directing, cinematography, and use of music. Can't get much more shallow and incoherent in terms of plot and character though, and certainly not fascinating enough to warrant a 2nd viewing to make better understanding of it.
