but it also favors style and extravagance over substance. 7/10

Great, actually in the best films style is the substance.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - 5/10. Anderson makes the classic mistake: by alluding to a host of better films, he reminds the viewer of what he should be watching instead. Here the allusions are all sonic: we get snippets of the scores from Merchant Ivory films and those of Satyajit Ray. On the Criterion Blu-ray there is actually an extra where Anderson chats with James Ivory about all the borrowings, with the images they originally accompanied. Suddenly, I couldn't get the disc out of my player fast enough so that I could replace it with some world class cinema. Thanks, Anderson!

It's fun. You've seen it before. A lot of people had issue with the tone, pace, and length. I had no problem with any that and thought it was fairly brisk for a 2:20 runtime. What I had problem with the most is that it's a total Tarantino imposter. No reason to watch it when you could just watch Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds or The Hateful Eight.

I watched it last night and already kinda forgot it and don't need to see it again. I just know that while it was on, it was a 7.5, and then it was gone and out of my life forever.

Also: Velvet Buzzsaw was fuckin awful. Seems to me Dan Gilroy is a one-hit-wonder as director.

Probably. It also seems to me they did it very quickly and for much less money than they should have. But the first problem is the screenplay, it looks like nobody knows where it goes. The best thing about the whole movie is the very last shot, the one they put the ending credits on.

Bad Times at the El Royale  is a wonderful film. Yes, it has a lot of similarities to a certain notorious filmmaker, but it easily beats the westerns of the (former?) genius. 9/10

It is fun, though, and well-made enough. There's endless better movies to watch but if you're in the mood for that kind of film, I'd still check it out.

The Old Man & the Gun (2018) - 8/10
A simple, fun, lighthearted crime drama. Excellent casting and acting. It's kept short, there's not a ton of conflict, it's weirdly relaxing and charming. Never takes itself too seriously. All these qualities actually make it very unique. Would watch again.

Medicine for Melancholy (2008) - 7/10
A well-acted, well-written, $13,000 feature debut from Barry Jenkins, who is gonna be one of the best filmmakers of his generation. The worst color-grading I've ever seen though (really), and some pretty shitty cinematography.

The Tango Lesson (1997) - 4/10. Sally Potter vanity project where she got her backers to underwrite her tango lessons and the chance to snog with Pablo Veron. The b&w photography is nice and the music is excellent, but as a work of self-indulgent excess this can't be beat.

King Rat (1965).  I hadn't seen this before.  George Segal in his pre-Goldbergs role, as one of few Americans in a Japanese POW camp in 1945 in Mayalsia.  Corporal King survives by bribing guards and avoiding real friendship.

One of my favorite POW films. 10/10

It's actually based on the reminiscences of James Clavell author of Shogun, he was a POW in Changi in Singapore. I remember watching an interview with him where he declared that to that day he still carries around a can of sardines with him wherever he went. He said one can of sardines could flavor a lot of rice meals and you never know when that would come in handy.

An Act Of Murder (1948): Judge Fredric March's Florence Eldridge is terminally ill with nothing but pain to look forward to. As a sort of mercy-killing he drives their car off a cliff. Eldridge dies but he survives, so he turns himself in for murder. Lawyer Edmond O'Brien helps him with the trial, against March's wishes. Good movie with a great cast and a strong message, but it probably needed more time for the courtroom scenes to really make an impact. Well worth watching. 7+/10

The November Man (2014): Ex-CIA agent Pierce Brosnan is asked to help his ex-lover out of Russia, but she gets killed, and Brosnan hunted by his former colleagues. Grittier than James Bond, nowhere near as entertaining tho. Still nice to see Brosnan play a secret agent of sorts. Shame about the mediocre plot tho. 6/10
