Distinto Amanecer aka Another Dawn (1943) Mexican "Cabaretera" Noir

"It just might be Mexico's first Film Noir."

Directed by Julio Bracho. Witten by Max Aub, Julio Bracho, and Xavier Villaurrutia (dialogue) and based of Max Aub's play "La vida conyugal" Excellent Cinematography by Gabriel Figueroa and Music by Ra?l Lavista.

Stars: Andrea Palma as Julieta, Pedro Armend?riz as Octavio, Alberto Gal?n as Ignacio Elizalde, Narciso Busquets as Juanito, Octavio Mart?nez as the man in black Jorge Ruiz. With Beatriz Ramos, Paco Fuentes, Felipe Montoya, Enrique Uthoff, Maruja Grifell, Manuel Arvide, Lucila Bowling, Manuel Dond?.

Julio Bracho along with directors Emilio "El Indio Fernandez, and Roberto Gavaldon heralded in what is now recognized as Mexico's Cinemas Golden Age. Aside from Pedro Armend?riz I'm not at all familiar with the cast who were still all very compelling to watch. The Noir Visuals lensed by Gabriel Figueroa were moody, crisp, and beautiful. The influence of mid 1930s French Poetic Realism is quite evident and it's been surmised that this may have been especially because the studio Films Mundiales was owned by expat French. Regardless - Bravo! 8-9/10

The Nightingale (2018) - 6/10
As a period piece, it works very well. As an antiracist/antisexist movie, it's ok but would work much better if the bad guy wasn't 100% evil beyond redemption like nobody ever is in real life. As a revenge story, it works for a while but doesn't manage to transcend the genre (although it kinda tries).

La Ronde (1950) - 7/10. In 1900 Vienna, an STD makes the rounds, but everyone touched (including the servants) are too well-bred to mention it. A hooker (Simone Signoret) gives it to a soldier (Serge Reggiani) who gives it to a maid (Simone Simon) who passes it on to a student (Daniel Gelin) who transmits it to a married woman (Danielle Darrieux) who gives it to her husband (some schlub) who then passes it to his mistress (Odette Joyeux) who infects a poet (Jean-Louis Barrault) who gives it to an actress (Isa Miranda) who passes it on to a count (Gerard Philipe). Finally the count meets the hooker, bringing La Ronde full circle. Hey, somebody could update this for the Covid generation! I just watched the original 110-minute cut (available here: http://rarefilmm.com/2018/12/la-ronde-1950-original-110min-version/ ) which enables you to hear Isa Miranda's original dialog (re-dubbed by a native French speaker for the 93-minute release cut). You'd think that the one-joke plot would get old but it never does. The tone of the film remains light and witty, thanks in large part to Anton Walbrook, the story's demiurge and MC.

La ronde deserves more than 7/10. Like all 4 of Oph?ls last 4 movies.

Arthur Schnitzler Week continues.

Traumnovelle (1969) - 6/10. Adapting the same source material used later as the basis for Eyes Wide Shut, this made-for-TV movie with its poorer production values takes half the time as Kubrick's film, making it, by definition, twice as good. Did Schnitzler ever write anything that wasn't about his fear of STDs?

No, it has no characters, only figures on a carousel. Here's my tally of the last 4, in reverse chronological order:

Lola Montes - 9
Madame de . . . 10
Le Plaisir - 8
La Ronde - 7

The great Danish metal band Volbeat has a great song about Lola Montez

Think of a Number (1969) - 7/10. The Danish original that was later remade as The Silent Partner (1978). The first two thirds of this parallel the remake almost exactly, but the last third is very different. It actually turns into something resembling a Patricia Highsmith story. Worth watching: http://rarefilmm.com/2019/08/taenk-pa-et-tal-1969/

El sol del membrillo / The Quince Tree of the Sun (1992) - 8/10. In Madrid, an artist begins a painting of a quince tree in his backyard. As the season advances, the weather turns bad, the artist can no longer have the light he needs, so he decides to settle for making a charcoal drawing. This too is never finished. From time to time, friends and colleagues come by to see his progress and talk with him. Abandoning his work, the man poses for his wife, also an artist. While posing, he falls asleep and has a dream.

In the end, the subject of the film is neither the artist nor his work, it is the tree. Victor Erice directed.

Cockfighter (1974) - 9/10. Formulaic comeback story is redeemed by an unusual milieu, a good mix of non-actors and professionals, and an amazing non-speaking central performance by Warren Oates.  With Richard B. Shull, Harry Dean Stanton, Laurie Bird, Steve "She's destroyed worlds!" Railsback, and a young Ed Begley Jr.
