The one other thing to note is that the first Cat People was a cheapie, whilst the remake cost considerably more to produce (even when dollars are adjusted). AND the first was done under the Hays/Breen code, and is much sexier than the post-code one.

Twilight - 4/10 - The most aggressively mediocre movie I've seen in a long while. I wasn't expecting anything out of this but due to having many friends and a brother into the books I decided why not? How else am I going to spend a Saturday? Well... It's not absolutely terrible, nor is it remotely good. It's just there. If there weren't fucking vampires in this movie it might be slightly better, but then I imagine that's part of the book/movie's appeal with its target audience. Some of the worst dialogue ever written by a human, too. The cinematography is occasionally interesting (though ruined by ridiculous CGI and music video "whooshing" effects) and Kristen Stewart is ungodly attractive. But otherwise, absolutely no reason to see this unless one is a horny adolescent girl. The fact that watching it pretty much fucked up my day only makes it all worse.

Dumb cousin of mine wanted to see it during the Holiday weekend.
He'd already payed for my ticket.
I figured it would be bad but I thought it would at least be entertaining.
Nothing could prepare me for what I saw.

Slumdog Millionaire - 8/10. All the idiots who went to Twilight should have gone to this instead. This is a marvelous piece of filmmaking (great images, a great Indo-pop soundtrack, an inventive 3-strand structure) that overcomes its pedestrian plot. Ultimately, though, the photography undermines the rags-to-riches premise: you have never seen such beautiful squalor, the slums of Mumbai are made to seem a magical place (like Australialand); there is no terror in the riot we witness, only awe (and the guy from the Man-on-fire union this time communicates nothing except ecstasy). Still, the central object is to reunite the hero with the girl, and although the end is never in doubt, the means by which it is accomplished keeps things interesting. The use of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, with its built-in drama, works wonderfully (and the actor playing the smarmy host should get an Oscar). Throughout the film, every cliche in the world is inventively presented. This is pure entertainment; or, in other words, a work of great craftsmanship, but little art. Having seen it once, there is really no need to ever go back to it again. But that is no reason to forgo the two hours of pleasure it provides.

That movie wasn't playing at the theatre I went to Jenkins. I am however regretting not having gone to see The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (which I've heard mixed reviews about, but at least wouldn't induce me to suicide) or even Australia again. If I'm going to be stranded in Homestead in a snow-storm with horrible traffic and none of the presents I wanted to get there, I might as well have picked a good movie to watch.
