Chungking Express - 5/10 - The first half = good off-beat comedy with an amusing noirish tinge. I'm not sure what anything had to do with anything, but it was well-written and acted (and funny) enough that I didn't mind just enjoying the ride. The second half = trite, twee and wholly predictable romcom. Several people in class made an Amelie comparison and that doesn't seem out of place, as both have stupid female characters doing wacky things for no good reason. At least Amelie was interestingly shot, and Audrey Tautou is way more likeable than whoever the girl is here. And that one didn't beat any jokes into the ground like this one did with the pineapple cans and California Dreamin'. By the time whatsherface started breaking into the cop's apartment I tuned out.
Groggy, you've done it again--a spot on review. O0 Sixteen years late, though. See, if you'd just actually watch some films, and then report promptly, you could probably do us all some good.

First Blood (1982) Probably my favourite action movie. 9\10

Liliom (1934)

Lang considered this his best movie. Now he was probably exaggerating, but it's a very good movie. 8\10.

Superman (1978) Not a good work, I think its main asset is Reeve, the definitive impersonatiion of the character. Hackman shows he's not  good at comedy.  6\10

Superman II (1980) . Twin to the first it is much better thanx to a more imaginative screenplay (well, at least as this hollywood crap can go) and a good villain played by Stamp. 7\10

La règle du jeu (1939) Only accolades for this movie many consider among the best movies ever. I think Renoir did much better elsewhere (Boudu, La carosse d'or and even Cordelier). What I cannot put up with here are all those farcical scenes in the villa and the recourse to a little ingenious expedient (the two jealous men cannot identify correctly a woman) to bring the stopry to the end. 7\10

You've convinced me. But where did you learn to score, Russia? Under such a damning critique, the movie would have to be rated in the 4-5 range.

Never Say Never Again (1983) This is all a minus compared to the original. One can maybe only argue if Carrera is better than Paluzzi (i go for the italian) or Basinger better than Augier (I'm no Basinger fan). Only scene worth remembering is the one with the sharks. But in the original the one in the swimming pool is a classic. Brandauer is simply irritating taking up the part of Celi. Connery shouldn't have been there at all. 7\10

I usually give 6\10 to a movie worth seeing once. 7\10 to one I might return to once again some years from last time I saw it. Which was the case with this movie I saw on tv in the 80's, dubbed. I might see it again in the future. It has great parts, undoubtedly. But it is not that great movie.

Sands of Iwo Jima (1949)

This was a let down. I hoped it was something completely politically uncorrect, like The Green Berets, say. Instead it is the usual "human side" view of the marines, expecially of Wayne and Agar, attached to some war scenes which are generally irritating thanx to the evident abuse of stock footage. The Wayne's character cannot be taken seriously after having watched movies like Full Metal Jacket, with a real drill sergeant playing the part.  5\10

The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

I'd say it is the Bogiest performance, but the role is unusual.
O0

Bound (1996) - 5/10
Erotic thriller about two lesbian chicks stealing from the mafia. The first directorial effort by the Wachowski brothers (or should I say brother and sister?) who are responsible for the Matrix trilogy. Joe Pantoliano does Ralph Cifaretto five years before his first appearance on The Sopranos... Don't ask me why I wasted my time with this.

Gershon and Tilly playing two dykes? Sounds like fun.

I watched that in a film class last year. I thought the first hour or so was kind of blech but once the main plot got underway it got more interesting.

Mongol - 8/10 - That epic Kazakh biopic of Genghis Khan from a few years back. It doesn't get highest marks because of a by-the-numbers story, including some obvious steals from Braveheart (among others). But for the most part it's really good: gorgeous cinematography, good acting (particularly Temujin's "brother"), excellent music, wonderful battle scenes with fairly limited CGI, and a decent romance. And it's all in Mongolian so FC can stop whining. One almost hopes there's a sequel. At least somebody makes 'em like they used to, but without Genghis Khan being played by John Wayne or Omar Sharif.
