Hulk (2003) They talk, and talk and talk: not the best premise for a cartoonish movie which ought to be all action and special effects. I give it 3\10 only for the desert battle, as the other two action scenes (in a more than 2h long movie) are difficult to decipher as they are all imbued in a dark photography. The rest is dullness and amateurish screenplaying.

Harry Brown (2009) - 8/10. A good--though not great--vigilante film, with Michael Caine as the pensioner who gets pushed by Council Estate ruffians one inch too far. Too many plot conveniences for my taste, but the film, shot in a classical style, looks great. I saw it in a Times Square cinema, digitally projected,  for 6 bucks.

Anton Chekov's The Duel (2009) - 10/10. The Brits love doing Chekov, and I'm not one to complain, as it spares me having to watch Russian actors in the roles. There's something about Russian male actors that really bugs me--they kvetch, they whinge, they simper.  A couple minutes of the typical performance and I'm going, "STFU, already!" Anyway, at the center of this film is a character who is a complete rotter--and no one can do rotters like the Brits (in this particular case it's an actor named Andrew Scott). He's living with a woman played by Fiona Glascott, who is absolutely gorgeous (she kinda looks like Annette Bening in her prime, but with red hair and a snowdrift complexion I wouldn't mind getting lost in). Most of the movie is about the fact that Mr. Rotter isn't happy living with his mistress, although she is, as I said, beautiful, and they have a nice dacha on--presumably--the Black Sea coast (the entire beautifully photographed film was actually shot in Croatia) and neither of them has to work. All this, yet nothing but ennui from our hero? No wonder he has earned the contempt of a third character; it is this contempt that finally brings matters to a head in the duel of the title. But, this being Chekov, you can't possibly imagine how things are going to turn out. The film offers one surprise after another, all delightful. With no stars and heretofore unfilmed locations and a story where nothing is telegraphed in advance, seeing this is like watching movies for the first time. A wonderful experience.

A look at the life and music of Pekka Streng who died at the age of 26 in 1975. Made me borrow Streng's albums.

Animal Factory (2000) - 7.5/10
Good prison movie directed by Steve Buscemi. Great soundtrack by John Lurie.

Death in Venice (1971)

Dirk Bogarde does a great job, the setting is perfect, the boy is pretty, yet I miss something. The whole thing looks frozen, and Tadzio is just a bishie, but not a seductive angel who you just HAVE to fall for. And I love bishies... 

Man, the super-simple and minimalist stage version I saw had more subtext/chemistry.

Ok, the close-ups are win. Did they use Ennio music, it would be more lively.  (Sorry Mahler.)

  We went to see it with school in 1999 or 2000 and I remember I almost fell asleep (which is more or less all I remember of it - I certainly had my eyes closed most of the time, so I really don't remember much.) And that was in a cinema. I guess if it were in TV, I'd really fall asleep...

I have to say this kinda grew on me with repeated viewings, but the first time around my rating would have been even lower than yours. In the end: I consider it a good movie, but as distant from something monumental as a good movie can be.
