trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders?

« #12570 : October 19, 2013, 09:10:48 PM »

Either/or both. In the play on which the film's based, their roles are roughly equal to Laura and Alec, and they're less out of place. In the movie they're an irritating distraction (though perhaps necessary as comic relief - the rest of the show is rather dour).

Stanley Holloway always annoys me, though. He's the worst part of My Fair Lady and This Happy Breed. I've only liked him in The Lavender Hill Mob, where he has Alec Guinness to play off of.

so you didn't like Brief Encounter? Groggy not liking David Lean?  :o

The Halloway-Carey scenes account for the 1/10 I did not award Brief Encounter in my review.

are you saying that you would rate Brief Encounter a 1/10 because of those scenes?

I'm saying that I subtracted 1/10 from a 10/10 score because of those scenes.

Dario Argento time:

Suspiria - 7/10 - 2nd viewing. I still think it falls apart in the end, but the ride getting there is pretty wicked.

Tenebre - 8/10 - Many directors make films about their own work, though approaches can differ. Federico Fellini frets about reality not matching his fantasies. Woody Allen neurotically examines his failings. Dario Argento, on the other hand, hacks his critics apart with an axe.

How would you describe it?

3 sentences:
1) Exactly what I expected (nothing more & nothing less)
2) a roller coaster for adults
3) See it in 3D or not, in Imax or not, but see it where you know the sound will be perfect.

More on this in the film's topic later today.

Laura (1944) dir: Otto Preminger stars: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, and Vincent Price great, some of the lines between Price and Webb are hilarious. 9/10

The Beast With Five Fingers (1946) 7/10. Is the detached hand of a dead pianist strangling people, or is Peter Lorre seeing things? Turns out, the answer is . . . yes! Good gothic horror flick with noir stylistics. Robert Alda's performance as the hero is so smooth it barely registers.

The Big Combo (1955) 7/10. First Blu-ray viewing. The widescreen framing is, for the most part, convincing. There's plenty of print damage, but black/white levels are solid, and the image is only a little soft. This is so much better than those copies of PD prints that have circulated for years. What about the film itself? Obviously, if you have lighting by Alton and music by Raksin you're half-way to a great movie. Getting all the way across the goal line, though, is difficult with a dodgy plot, a dull hero, a wilting heroine, and some of the lamest dialogue ever committed to cinema. Strangely, although everyone around him is mouthing idiocies, Richard Conte is never less than riveting. Did they really save all the good lines for him, or was he just the kind of actor who could read the phone book and get applause? "First is first, and Second is Nobody." Hmmm, no, must be the performance.

V for Vendetta (2005)
- 5.5/10

Disappointing, to say at least.

V for Vendetta (2005)
- 5.5/10

Disappointing, to say at least.

My main beef with V is that really wanted to convince us it's somehow  profound, when it's pitched at the sophistication level of a high school sophomore. Muttering about revolution doesn't lend depth to a movie. Presumably the graphic novel is better in this regard.
