The Small Back Room - 8/10 - Another wartime P&P drama with David Farrar as a scarred explosives expert. Provides a dark character study, showing the effects war on ordinary people. P&P provide amusing satire of government bureaucracy: Jack Hawkins, cast against type, is a riot playing a gladhanding salesman-turned-official. Aside from a surreal dream sequence it's directorally restrained by P&P standards, but the sparse, oppressive atmosphere is appropriate.
I don't disagree with any of this. I'd add only that the relationship between Farrar and Kathleen Byron is nicely portrayed. And the Robert Morley cameo is amusing. And Cyril Cusack as a stuttering demo man was an inspired idea. It's all kind of a British Lost Weekend, but with UXBs.

This post gets Agnew's stamp of approval!

And also a good demonstration of how The Imitation Game should have been done.

Contact (Zemeckis, 1997) - 7/10

Second viewing (first in many years, I had forgotten almost everything). Pretty good. Some great shots/ideas. Some cheesy ones. Jody is cool, we need to see her more often.

Eva (1962) 8/10. Losey takes Stanley Baker and Jeanne Moreau to Venice and Rome. Baker plays a first-class shit who cheats on Virna Lisi (WTF?) so he can be with call girl Moreau. The great thing about this film is that Moreau treats Baker with contempt the whole time--and he can't get enough of it. Yeah, amour fou and all that. Perhaps it all goes on a little long. But just when things seem to be heading into a rut Moreau finds that Baker is able to plunge to an ever greater depth. Great preparation for Losey's Accident. Nice score by Michel Legrand.

Cafe Society 7/10
Hey, a good Woody Allen film. It's been a while. For those who still doubted Jesse Eisenberg and Stewart were great actors, you're proved wrong once more.
Side note: wide angle photography suits Woody Allen's (lack of) style amazingly well.

Glad to hear that. And I even liked Irrational Man quite a bit. Did you see it at Cannes, or is it open as a regular release in France? I heard BFG was very good as well.

Tomorrow Night (1998) - 4/10
Louis CK's first of two feature films as director is very bad. Annoying and mostly unfunny, but the story is so ridiculous that I need to give it credit for being  original. Reminds me very much stylistically of Robert Downey Sr's work.

I haven't seen irrational man yet. I saw Cafe Society as a regular release. I think they wanted to play on the Cannes effect and opened in Cannes and everywhere in France at the same time.
