The joy of loving is to live in a world of Mandom

Cold War / Zimna wojna (2018/2017) - 9/10. I liked Pawel Pawlikowski's previous film Ida; like it, this film imitates the style of films made during the period (50s-60s) in which the action takes place (including the use of 1.37:1 AR!). This is the most beautiful b&w film ever made (except it isn't, of course, "film"). The story is about a troubled couple who can't stay together but they can't keep apart; their difficulties are exacerbated by the Cold War and the problems with moving back and forth from Poland to France. There is also the matter of their calling: both are musicians, and whether they are in Poland or France they are constantly under pressure to compromise their artistic visions. One of the really great things about the film beside the images is the way in which music is incorporated into the whole. It's as if a worthy successor to Kieslowski had at last been found. In fact, they could have called this film Three Colors: Black, White, and Grey.

Black KKKlansman (2018)   It was OK.  The problem I had with the movie was the premise itself.  One cop is on the phone undercover and another cop plays his part in person.  Based on a true story so thats how the plot had to go.   I rank it a 7 out of 10...

Hot Fuzz (2017) - 8/10
Don't know how it took me so long to watch this, but it's easily my favorite Edgar Wright movie (now seen them all besides Fistful of Fingers). I liked it so much that I might even consider giving his horrible Scott Pilgrim a third try.

EDIT: N_L I noticed that Arrow is releasing Fistful of Fingers newly restored on Blu Ray this year. I'll hold out for that instead of finding a torrent

Good boy! Hot fuzz in definitely the easiest Wright film. I always say it's his GBU: that's the film where he perfected his style while keeping everything light and entertaining. THe result is that everybody likes Hot Fuzz. Scott Pilgrim is his OUATITW: he got ambitious.

I have never seen Fistful of Fingers either. I also still have to finish Spaced (I have the DVD).

Polar (2019): Mads Mikkelsen is a hitman about to retire, but his boss Matt Lucas wants him dead to claim his pension funds, and sends his 'A-team' (yes really) to take care of business. Mikkelsen is a natural bad-ass, and the movie has a few entertaining set pieces but overall it's a poor The Punisher meets Shoot 'Em Up meets Léon rip-off. 5/10

"I Accuse" by Jose Ferrer, 1958.

About 1/2 mile from me are streets named Dreyfuss and Emile Zola.

Pretty pretentious for Arizona, no?

Colombiana (2011) - 10/10. It's hard to beat the thumbnail at IMDb: "She works for her uncle as a hitman by day, but her personal time is spent engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target - the mobster responsible for her parents' death."La Femme Nikita for a new generation, with Olivier Megaton (under the guidance of Luc Besson) hitting all the terms of the action film. But the execution is flawless. You Will Believe That a Tired Formula Can Get Up Off It's Ass and Dance Swan Lake. And Zoe Saldana is a real honey.
Saw this again and enjoyed it. Maybe I scored it a little high last time, but it is essentially a Luc Besson film that is shorter than all other Luc Besson films so deserves special recognition.

A Scanner Darkly (2006) - 10/10. Greatest film ever. Well, er, okay, wouldja believe: Greatest animated film ever? It's got acting, plot, humor, poignancy. . . . stuff absent from Japanimation, Pixar, Disney. A cartoon for adults, if you will (but not an"adult cartoon"). I guess it helps if you like the rotoscoped cast: Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Whatshisname, Winona Ryder. And about a thousand bit players. The Radiohead songs and the Graeme Revell score really cement the deal.

You'd think it would be more Western-y

The Favourite (2018): Emma Stone makes a play for Rachel Weisz's position, as queen Olivia Colman's best friend, and counsil. Filled with dark humor and fish eye lenses, it is very entertaining but it also favors style and extravagance over substance. 7/10

Close (2019): Noomi Rapace gets hired as a temporary bodyguard for Sophie Nélisse... and of course that is when shit hits the fan. Derivative thriller that starts off well but soon loses steam. I love Rapace but she can't save this movie. 6-/10
