Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) - 7.5/10
...but this Albert Finney starrer is great!

Starman (1983) - 10/10
One of the best movies ever made.

At Eternity's Gate (2018) - 4/10
A pretentious Malick imitation. Dafoe was good. I watched the first 45 min and then skipped to the last chapter of the DVD. I don't feel I missed anything, really, and was glad to realize that the RedBox return was at the grocery store, and saved some time to get cooking done early.

Revolutionary Road 7/10

I'll have to watch it again to be sure about the rating. It's always hard for me to rate a movie with 5 endings consecutive after the first viewing (it always leaves me out of the movie during the last 15 minutes). But overall I was more than pleasantly surprised, I expected something way more déjà-vu than this.

I just saw this movie for the first time. I rate it a 2/10, and maybe that is generous. I can't find a single thing appealing about this. OK, the actors aren't bad, and if you like seeing an earlier era recreated, the production design is good. But this story did not interest me at all.

Yeah, yeah, so the postwar "feel good" 1950's maybe had its problems and wasn't so perfect after all. So what. So even people making good money with nice suburban homes with white-picket fences aren't necessarily happy. So what. Film noir already taught us that. So fucking what. I don't give a shit about any of these characters or their story. Ugh. What a piece of crap.

I bet n_l loved it for the cinematography. I'm starting to think that's all he cares about

No I love the themes of the movie. I’ve been working on the same stuff for over a decade. So the story is more than ok with me. Thinking about it I think what still disturbs me in that the story follows these themes too straightforwardly. You’re supposed to think a bit more about your story as a real story and not just a university thesis. I did the same mistake in a short movie years ago but the short format kind of cornered us into doing that “mistake” (i’d still do it the same way). For a feature length movie (even (especially?) an adaptation), the mistake isn’t easy to forgive and I think that’s why you give it a 2.

Your rating is still ridiculous, objectively false and impossible to defend. But i’m happy to see use a rating under 5 for once! It helps take your regular rating more seriously :p

Maybe, at least it was the film from which Leone got the idea to try to cast William Shatner for every role in GBU.

On a bit of a Jim Jarmusch jag just now.

Broken Flowers (2005) - 7/10.  Essentially a remake of Un carnet de bal (1937), although in Duvivier's original it's a woman who tracks down her old flames (and there are more of them). I do like the way Jarmusch updated the concept and made it his own. I disagree with noodles_leone about the fact the film is unfinished. If by that he means Jarmusch could have put more into it, well--I think Jarmusch made exactly the film he set out to make. The "unfinished" quality, if that's what you want to call it, is intentional.

I still like the film a lot, although Paterson is now my favorite Jarmusch.

I virtually never rate a movie below a 5/10, cuz if it's that bad, I'll usually shut it off in middle, and I never give a rating for a movie I haven't finished

Maybe the cast, maybe the high rating on IMDB, or maybe I was hoping to see them sink like Titanic.

Parker (2013) 6/10. Statham: same-o, same-o. J-Lo: even at her advanced age, oddly appealing. The Bald Guy from The Shield: Meh, not so much. With Patti Lupone as J-Lo's mom, and Bobby Cannavale (the reigning Prince of Broadway) as chopped liver. Oh yeah, there's an undead Nick Nolte wandering around somewhere in this too. OMG, I just watched a Taylor Hackford film!

I'm upping this to a "7" or maybe even an "8." Loved the stunts and practical effects with no CGI enhancement. Action scenes are edited well enough that you don't lose track of what's going on (a rare thing these days).  The knife-scene-in-the-condo-with-the-balcony is worth (as they say) the price of admission alone.

It's intentional only if intentional means "I don't feel like working today". The result is a (charming) missed opportunity that would have been much easier to forgive if Un Carnet de Bal didn't exist.
