The War Wagon - Clair Huffaker

I don't remember I ever saw the movie, but if I did I don't remember a thing about it. Judging from the trailer and the synopsis they left little of the novel: basically only a reformed version of the mechanism of the assault to the gold carriage. The character played by Wayne seems to be completely different from the one of the novel: that does explain the change of the original title (Badman). The story is basically that of the plan to steal the gold and the relationship of the main character (a badman with a code) and his accomplices in the heist, among whom there is his little brother. 7/10 because it is short (not even 130 pages) and the way the coup is planned.

Riders West (Dell, 1956)

Small but valuable collection, including 3 stories of various lenght (all 8/10), the famous article by Raine debunking the Wyatt Earp myth; and another good one on  range cooks.

The  Pocket  Book of Western Stories ed. by Harry E. Maule

A good mixture of classic stories, pulp fare and just good tales set in different locales and in different situations. I had reviewed the slightly more large hb edition. 7-8/10

The Gallows Land - Bill Pronzini

Pronzini is a dependable author, both in P.I. and western genre. I have still to read something by him that doesn't contain some item of interest and this one is no exception. It is very good for 3/4 and it has a thrilling chase in the arroyo and some good desert lore. 7/10

Quincannon - Bill Pronzini

Not much of a western, but a detective story. Secret service agent Q. going after  a gang of counterfeiters. 7/10

The Last Days of Horse-Shy Halloran - Bill Pronzini

Pronzini adds some humor to this story of a would-be highwayman who has not an easy relationship with horses. 7/10
