You are right it does look very similar, especially that electrical conduit pipe on the corner on the left side, my only question, why bother changing the windows on the existing building, it would have worked as is with just the sign change, its not as if somebody other than us is really going to say I saw that in OUTIA.

A) Do you know whether or not the building was/is in use or abandoned, both in 1983 (when OUATIA was filmed) and now?

B) Do you know for certain that all the locations used in Boardwalk Empire are in the NY-area? (I am just wondering if perhaps it is possible that the building is indeed in Montreal, and Boardwalk Empirejust shot exteriors there, eg. with a second unit)?

IMDb lists all of Boardwalk Empire's locations, all are within the NYC area. I'm thinking it may be near Steiner Studios in the Old Navy Yard.

I thought the "NYS Reformatory For Boys" building was in Montreal but after watching Boardwalk Empire, I'm not sure.








Some of the windows and other features have changed but it looks the same building as the "Atlantic City Armory" in a recent episode of Boardwalk Empire.

If it is in Brooklyn or Queens it could possibly be another place on the tour.

I don't see how the two shots could be showing the same building:

A) in the OUATIA shots, there are 3 columns of windows side by side.
 in the BE shots, there are 2 columns of windows, with a brick column between the columns of windows.

B) The door/gate in the BE shots is much lower;
 in the OUATIA shots, the metal gate goes much higher than the brick is in the BE shots.

(maybe you can argue that it's a diff. side of the same building. But I don't see how it could be the same exact shot, unless in the last 25 years, they added brick columns between the windows, and lowered the doorway by adding more brick to the top of it. Doesn't seem like it would make much sense to do that...).

I suppose it could be the same architectural firm that tweeked the same design for two buildings, (much like New York City Public School buildings sort of all look the same) but that electrical conduit pipe looks exactly the same for something as random as that and as once's detail photos show the weather stain on the stone blocks even looks exactly the same.

btw, I have never seen any episodes of Boardwalk Empire yet. Should I be watching it?

I don't get HBO but it looks promising I usually watch HBO stuff on DVD
