Con Michael Jackson se n’è andato un artista che ha fortemente incrementato il mercato dei dischi e ha dato un contributo eccezionale di fantasia, generosità, partecipazione a quella forma di arte contemporanea che sta a cavallo tra musica ed immagine. Sì, parlo di quell’arte che in qualche ghetto intellettuale viene ancora considerata di serie B, ma appartiene invece al nostro tempo, a pieno titolo. Ed è un peccato che Jacko, un vero campione, se ne sia andato così, all’improvvisio, stroncato probabilmente da quella tensione continua alla quale ha sempre sottoposto il suo corpo. Ci mancherà, mancherà a tutti la sua vitalità sconfinata che ha generato prodotti di altissima qualità.

Dico prodotti senza complessi, in quanto i video di Jackson rappresentano un mix portentoso di musica e immagini, e hanno il merito di arrivare in eguale misura all’udito e alla vista. Sono autentici film in cui il suono è purissimo, senza infiltrazioni né contaminazioni esterne. All’opposto, penso a quante volte noi compositori ci lamentiamo perche il missaggio del cinema ”sporca” le nostre note...E penso che Thriller, il video più famoso della storia, è un capolavoro assoluto in cui il protagonista lascia la possibilità di esprimersi anche agli altri, ai coreografi, ai ballerini, in un vortice pirotecnico di fantasia e colori.

Fu Sergio Leone il primo a parlarmi del talento di Michael Jackson: era un suo fan e mi insegnò ad apprezzarlo. Oggi se dovessi citare i titoli dei successi della popstar appena scomparsa, sarei impreparato, anche se quelle musiche stupendamente arrangiate da Quincy Jones mi sono entrate dentro. E se dovessi immaginare un erede di Jacko, non saprei chi indicare. Forse Madonna, per la sua capacità straordinaria di creare un’immagine e di trasformarsi continuamente come icona pop. Ma non saprei dire se musicalmente, e non solo, la signora Ciccone sarebbe all’altezza di Jacko.

An heir of Jackson is maybe Madonna. Jackson's main contribution to modern art is in the musical video: Thriller is  an absolute masterpiece.

He says he saw some of his shows but musically doesn't seem to rank him at all.
