2) Col. Douglas Mortimer; the best shooter of both Carolinas, smokes only after he eats - played by Lee Van Cleef

3) Old Prophet; the old prophet who lives near the railroad tracks - played by Joseph Eggert (had to look on IMDb for the name of the character)

4) Wild; Quasimodo of the Old West - played by Klaus Kinski

5) Nino; Indio's right hand and platonic lover, half-Guinean, half, something else - played by Mario Braga

I can only second this list, although Manco is pretty awesome too. But who isn't?

1. El Indio
An obvious choice but for my few dollars the best bad guy in ANY film: a deeply complicated character, the watch, the glazed eyes and the deathwish. I still remember seeing this film for the first time 20+ years ago and wondering if i was wrong in the head to feel sorry for a psychotic killer...that's the strength of Volonte's acting
2. Always liked Groggi because he turns up with his own crew, Indio needs more muscle so he looks for a subcontractor.
Like his flash dressing, and the way he gives Indio a bit of stick now and again with his trick shooting and references to jailtime. An obvious second in command who is eyeing the top spot.
3. Colonel Mortimer
for delivering the line "No, the question isn't indiscreet...but the answer could be."
4. Wild
great Kinski performance, hardly any lines but gives it his usual sneering, face twitching performance...always liked the way he counts: "ONE...TWO...THREE...NOW FOUR...AND A FIVE...." Where did they pick him up from??!
5. hmmm, I'll stick Sancho Perez at number 5 just because he gets his bounty up to $5000 on the sly through no work of his own.

Well, I'm pleased to see Huey got one vote but my list would be:

Interesting topic and especially as Clint is generally excluded. I would say it's a toss-up between Indio and Mortimer for number one while several minor characters vie for the other three places.

One that hasn't been mentioned above, who really impressed me when I first saw the film decades ago, is Calloway.

You soon realise that Mortimer is a bounty hunter and is after an outlaw called Calloway but we don't actually see Calloway until LVC shoots his horse from under him. I expected Calloway to be a typical western baddie, someone like Victor Jory or John Ireland or Claude Akins, but instead we get Jose Terrin who has been made up to look like a character in a horror movie. I would place him at number three in the list.

For numbers four and five, take your pick from Old Prophet, Groggy, Nino, Cuchillo, Wild and, another under-rated one, Tomaso.
