Had Stanley Kubrick directed a Western, would it compare to any of Leone's?

What, One-Eyed Jacks?
I think Barry Lyndon gives a decent idea of the kind of Western Kubrick might have made. Hopefully it wouldn't have been as dull and lifeless.

No, no, I meant in general, if he ever made one.

Well, I've weighed in before on
Barry Lyndon
being SK's Western. Kubrick liked to do adaptations--he would have needed a novel he really liked or respected that could have provided the source material for him. And Westerns, being pulpy, weren't really the kinds of fiction he gravitated toward. Perhaps he might have done well with
True Grit
if that title had been available to him. I'm trying to think of other novels of the genre that might have appealed to him, but nothing is coming to mind. I'll try to give it more thought.

I voted yes.
I understand Stanley Kubrick prepped One-Eyed Jacks but Brando replaced him with Brando before filming started. So we don't really know what a Stanley Kubrick western would have been like. I don't think Barry Lyndon gives us a clue, either. I wish Kubrick had made more films -- especially more space films -- and I'm absolutely positive he would have made very impressive and challenging westerns.

I just had to post in here...I think SK would have made a great Western, as he made a great film in virtually every genre he worked in. It would have been interesting to see, as it would not likely have been a "Western" per se but at least in the historical time frame. I'm thinking it would feel like a cross between Peckinpah and Leone, or maybe even a bit more narratively tight like his 1950's period.
I still need to see
One Eyed Jacks
. Every time I go to find it I only find terrible public domain copies that are pan & scanned to hell.

I voted "don't know"
I think both Leone and Kubrick are among the greatest filmmakers.
And I adore BARRY LYNDON.
There's no doubt Kubrick could make a great Western but I'm not sure if it would be as great as Leone's top tier work.
Who knows?
I would have loved one though.
